Teaching Certification in Secondary Education
New teacher certification classes for Secondary Education start every fall and spring. Earn a teaching certificate in just 16 months, depending on prior credits. Secondary Education students must have a bachelor's degree prior to starting the program. Classes meet face-to-face two evenings a week, 5:30–9:30 p.m. This allows candidates to maintain their daytime employment and/or family responsibilities until they begin student teaching. Some daytime hours are required during the program for field experience.
To be recommended for teaching certification by NNU, a candidate must meet the complete requirements of the teacher education program in effect at the time of admission to teacher education and any additional requirements if required by the standards of State or regulatory agencies.
Students enrolled in the Secondary Education Teaching Certification program have the option to continue on and receive a Master of Education degree from NNU's Department of Graduate Education. You can find this process outlined in our Program Information document.
